Frequently asked questions

The things people actually ask at the counter. Anything we've missed, ask us directly.

How long do repairs take?

Most phone screens and batteries are done same day, often while you wait, since appointments mean your device goes straight on the bench. Laptop repairs typically run 1–3 business days depending on parts. Board-level microsoldering and data recovery are quoted with their own timeline after diagnosis, usually 3–7 business days. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you the lead time before you commit.

Why appointment only?

Because it's better for you. An appointment means your device goes straight onto the bench instead of into a queue, the right parts can be ordered before you arrive, and you get our full attention for the hand-off conversation about what's wrong, what it costs, and what your options are. Book online or call +1 (416) 555-0142; same-week slots are usually available.

What warranty do you give on repairs?

90 days on parts and labour, in writing, on every repair. If the fault we fixed comes back within that window, we make it right at no charge. The warranty covers our work and our parts. It doesn't cover new accidental damage, a fresh drop or dunk, or unrelated faults, and we'll tell you which is which.

What happens to my data during a repair?

We treat every device as if it were full of things we're not entitled to see, because it is. We work with the device locked whenever the repair allows, we never browse files, and if a repair requires your passcode (some diagnostics do), we ask first and use it only for testing. You're welcome to change it before drop-off and after pickup. Devices are stored in a locked cabinet when not on the bench.

Do you use genuine parts?

We're an independent shop, so we source parts on the open market: original-pull (harvested from genuine devices), new OEM-equivalent, and premium aftermarket. Where more than one grade exists, and phone screens are the classic case, we quote each option and spell out the trade-offs. What we never do is put a part in your device without telling you exactly what it is.

I dropped my device in water. What should I do right now?

Power it off and don't charge it. Don't put it in rice; rice does nothing while corrosion does plenty. Then get it to a bench fast, because water damage is a race between you and corrosion. Our $49 assessment includes an ultrasonic clean of the board, which stops the clock, and it's credited toward any follow-on repair.

Do you take mail-in repairs?

Yes, from anywhere in Ontario. Contact us first so we know what's coming and can give you a reference number. Ship tracked and insured, power the device off, and pack it so it can't move in the box, either in original packaging or with two inches of padding all round. We confirm arrival the day it lands, diagnose, and quote before any work. Return shipping (tracked, insured) is billed at cost.

Is there a diagnostic fee?

Standard diagnosis is $40, and board-level or water-damage assessment is $40–$49. In every case the fee is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. If we can't fix it, or you decide the quote isn't worth it, the diagnostic fee is all you pay. Free diagnostics are usually priced into someone's quote anyway; we'd rather be upfront about it.

Will an independent repair void my manufacturer warranty?

In Canada, a manufacturer can't void your warranty simply because an independent shop opened the device. They'd have to show our work caused the fault they're refusing to cover. That said, if your device is still under manufacturer warranty for the fault you're seeing, our advice is usually to use that warranty first. We'll say so at diagnosis, even when it costs us the job.

Where do you stand on right to repair?

Firmly for it. When you buy a device you should be able to fix it, yourself or through a shop you trust, with access to parts, schematics, and diagnostic tools. Parts-pairing and serialized components punish owners for choosing independent repair, and they're why some jobs cost more than they should. We support right-to-repair legislation in Canada and work that way at the bench: repair over replacement, and boards repaired rather than swapped.

What if it can't be fixed?

Then you pay the diagnostic fee and nothing else, and you get a plain explanation of what died and what your options are, including whether the data is recoverable even if the device isn't. If you want, we'll also recycle the device responsibly through an electronics recycler, with storage removed and destroyed or returned to you first.

Should I back up before bringing my device in?

If the device still works well enough to back up, then yes, always. Most repairs don't touch your data, but any repair carries a small risk, especially on devices that are already unstable. If it won't power on or won't sync, don't force it; tell us data matters when you book and we'll treat recovery as part of the plan rather than an afterthought.
